United States

Oral Health Nursing Education and Practice (OHNEP) is an organization that helps nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives, nurses, and other health professionals incorporate oral health into clinical education and patient care. OHNEP houses a variety of turnkey toolkits and curriculums related to oral health integration into nursing and other clinical practice. The organization has historically been housed at the NYU College of Nursing. CareQuest Institute has provided funding in the amount of $2,154,480 since 2014 to develop and maintain a suite of oral health educational resources related to integration for use by nursing and other educational programs, as well as the provider field overall.

For background, OHNEP’s current Executive Director, Judi Haber, is preparing to retire. The primary goal of this proposal is to transition OHNEP to an entity outside of NYU so that it can be maintained following Dr. Haber’s retirement. That said, OHNEP is requesting a final 6-month transition grant to complete a slate of activities and deliverables:

OHNEP will fold its existing resources and functions into the National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health (NIIOH). This will involve amending the NIIOH 501c3 by-laws to reflect that OHNEP is a program of NIIOH and delineate the roles and responsibilities of each entity;

OHNEP will recruit a new leader for the OHNEP program;

OHNEP will contribute to NIIOH’s new partnership and strategy setting with National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education;

OHNEP will collaborate with NIIOH to develop co-branded marketing strategies. This will involve updating and enhancing social media, website, logo and messaging to reflect the new OHNEP/NIIOH collaborative model; and also encompass direct communication with stakeholders about new organizational model;

Identifying potential funding sources to promote sustainability;

Establishing an interprofessional External Advisory Board, including consumer representation;

Completing current OHNEP publications in progress.

The budget for this proposal is $99,402. About $93,000 of the request is allocated for staff time for the Executive Director and Program Manager. The remainder of the budget is allocated for conference travel and a virtual communications platform. This request represents 100% of the organization’s overall budget.
