Welcome Dr. Sean G. Boynes As Director of Interprofessional Practice

Welcome Dr. Sean G. Boynes As Director of Interprofessional Practice

Dr. Sean G. Boynes has joined the DentaQuest Institute as Director of Interprofessional Practice.  Dr. Boynes brings extensive practical experience in connecting oral health with overall health—a practice he believes will have the greatest impact in improving overall health in economically-challenged communities. Dr. Boynes will guide program development and research as well as develop best practice models for care delivery that more fully address the needs of underserved populations.

Before joining DentaQuest, Dr. Boynes served as Director of Dental Medicine at CareSouth Carolina, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Society Hill, SC. He rebuilt a dental program that had been inactive since the 1980s.  Today, with ten sites serving five counties of the rural Pee Dee region of the state, CareSouth Carolina cares for rural migrant farmers and the urban working poor, with 80 percent of its patient roster living below the federal poverty line. As Director of Dental Medicine, Dr. Boynes developed best-practice models for integrated dental-medical care and extensive school-based care clinics.

“In our integrated dental health model,” said Dr. Boynes, “we worked with our medical counterparts; if patients had oral disease markers, we identified them and referred them for other health concerns, such as diabetes.”

“The future of health care is collaborative and interprofessional, especially as we work to address the needs of underserved populations and end a preventable disease,” said Dr. Rob Compton, President of the DentaQuest Institute. “The DentaQuest Institute embraces a collaborative approach to quality improvement in oral health care delivery, involving dental and healthcare professionals in multiple settings (hospital, safety net, private practice) to develop and validate science-based protocols and best practices that improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of care that they provide to their patients.  We look forward to the knowledge and new ideas Dr. Boynes will bring to our work.”

Previously, Dr. Boynes served as Director of Anesthesia Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He has been actively involved in pharmacologic, anesthesia, and public health related research, having served as principle investigator for several federal and industry funded research projects. Dr. Boynes is a member of numerous professional organizations and serves as chairperson on multiple national and international committees. He has authored or co-authored approximately sixty publications relating to dentistry, public health, pharmacology, or anesthesiology and his book, Dental Anesthesiology: A Guide to the Rules and Regulations of the United States of America, is currently being used as a reference guide by many dental organizations and oversight boards. In addition, Dr. Boynes has been recognized by many organizations for his passionate service. The National Health Service Corp recently featured him as one of the 40 top clinicians for their 40th Anniversary Celebration. The National Children's Oral Health Foundation lists him as a Dentist of Distinction.  He will also be awarded the South Carolina School Health Services Award this year.
