The purpose of this grant is to support Native American Connections in re-working the Arizona American Indian Oral Health Initiative (AAIOHI) to improve oral health outcomes in Tribal communities throughout Arizona, and primarily rural Tribes, by focusing on elevating the discussion on oral health and disparities found in Native communities. This project will build on the network structure that was created in the projects previous iterations to have oral health increasingly included health dialogue and public policy, particularly policy impacting Native Americans. The AAIOHI will do this through improved coordination on advocating for oral health policy that reflects the needs of tribal communities and will focus on: implementation of dental therapy, passage of a dental benefit for pregnant women, improvement in Native American dental utilization within CHIP, and increased support for a dental benefit in Medicare. Specifically, Native American Connections will increase civic engagement within all 22 Arizona Tribes, design and implement a children's oral health campaign, and continue to ensure that a community-based Tribal voice is integrated into the ongoing design of dental therapy. This work aligns with the OH2020 goals of shifting the public perception of the value of oral health as a part of overall health and establishing an adult dental benefit in Medicaid.
