On February 8, 2017 Dr. Natalia I. Chalmers presented a Continuing Education course at the Maryland State Dental Association as part of their CE Lunch-in-Learn series. Together with Dr. Jeremy Horst the CE course was entitled "Trends in Emergency Department Utilization & Silver Diamine Fluoride and SMART Fillings" (3 CE Credits). Dr. Chalmers’s presentation focused on “Trends in Emergency Department Utilization for Dental and Oral Health Related Conditions.”
Participants gained knowledge on the differences between ED utilization for dental and non-dental conditions, specific factors that are significantly associated with ED utilization for dental conditions, and the gender, race and income disparities in ED utilization for dental conditions. Dr. Chalmers also discussed the challenges and opportunities for achieving health equity in ED utilization for dental/oral health related conditions and identified specific factors associated with the high level of return ED visits for DOHRC. The course was well attended with over 70 participants, including dental providers, stakeholders from FQHCs, hospitals and state policy makers.
